Our Story

We are Sol-Powered

A project initiated from just an idea, targeting the use of energy as a way to end poverty and strengthen healthcare in places with low or no access to electricity.

We see economic scalability and local ownership as the main factors for overcoming decades of stagnated development.

We are a group of individuals, from across the globe, working towards empowering low income communities to take control of their energy generation, and to cut ties with socially, financially and environmentally damaging diesel-generators, unreliable grids and inequitable energy distribution.

Decided, designed, build, and owned by the community.

Find out more about us as individuals here.

We are proud to announce that STAGE 1 of the pilot project is complete! 3kw system was installed nov 12th on the maternity ward of Rusape General Hospital. Read more about it on our blog!

The Objective

To eliminate inaccessible, unaffordable, unreliable, dirty energy as being a barrier to achieving good healthcare.

We have a truly bottom-up approach.

A local delivering partner with close access to the community is our credible voice in the areas in which we work.

We adopt a Rights-Based Approach, and a community engagement tool that is inclusive and gender sensitive.

We include the community at every level of the process, and only go ahead with projects that have full backing, and there is a real need - determined by the community.

We train selected members of the community as solar-energy entrepreneurs, as well as choose a local technical partner who will provide the equipment and then take on the trainees post-training.

Our team comprises experts from across the fields: from Octopus Energy and Octopus Renewables, through to Engineers Without Borders.

Simple. Effective. Fair.

Help us out

Energy is vital to run hospitals and clinics, but in some parts of the world it’s scarce, with many facilities having to do without it at times. In areas where energy is unreliable, the only other option is costly diesel generators - which can take up to 40% of the available budget.

Money could be better spent on medicine, or training, or anything else that is needed.
